Magnus effect pitches create high air pressure by one part of the ball and the ball is pushed away from that spot. The higher the air pressure, the more it breaks. The maximum amount of air high pressure is generated when the ball spins with its axis perpendicular to the line of flight. The faster the ball rotates and the more surface that can cause air turbulence (like the laces) moving in the proper direction the more it breaks.
